Launceston Castle
Type: Castle/Fort
The Castle dates from the early years of the Norman conquest. Towering over the town, it was a reminder of the power of the Earls (later Dukes) of Cornwall. Built by Count Robert Mortain (William The Conquerors half brother) the castle was extensively re-modelled in the mid-13th Century. However, the castles importance declined and it became other than its defences; the mound with its store keep and high tower, the ruined gatehouses and curtain wall, together with the impressive earthworks.
